Sock plays Eastbourne Qs as alternate

Under normal circumstances, the world’s No. 14 male player would be a slam-dunk to get a wild card into an ATP 250 event.

But a couple of Grand Slam champions named Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka got first dibs at Eastbourne next week.

And so American Jack Sock, looking to the grass tuneup event as a slump-buster, entered the qualifying.

And even then, he only got in as an alternate.

Sock, who has a new coach, needed two wins to make the main draw.  But he lost to former No. 51 Daniel Brands, 64, 7-6 (4).
